I’ve been a working video/television professional for almost 15 years. I got my start as a DJ for a small market Top-40 radio station while finishing up my senior year in high school. It was a great job to get me through college, but once I became exposed to the television side of the business, I quickly found myself favoring video production over talking on the radio.
Specifically, I gravitated to editing, which at the time was still an analog tape-to-tape process. The closest computers got to editing back then was inside some of the dedicated hardware devices that controlled the various tape machines.
Nevertheless, I endeavored to learn more, and soon found myself employed as a production assistant for the local origination department of Adelphia Cable in Buffalo, NY. It was here that I really got to cut my teeth on all things television. From camera work, to technical directing, to engineering, I gained exposure to multiple facets of the business, and learned the solid principles of production that I still employ to this day.
Throughout the years I have continued my efforts to learn, and with the advent of non-linear editing and computer-based software, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to make this happen. I taught myself Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, and a host of other software packages. I’ve learned to edit with a number of non-linear systems. I’ve taken on many field camera assignments, and have even run game camera for a number of live sporting events. I’ve run slo-mo instant replay for just about every major live sporting event as well, from the NFL to the World Senior Games. I’ve even managed to keep my radio voice in practice through numerous voice-over recordings.
Lately, my main focus has been on editing, scriptwriting, and motion graphic design. I have also been heavily involved in the cable TV marketing field, where I help to promote strong brand awareness through demographic research, targeted spot placement, and maintaining strict design control over creative content.
Coming from a traditional hardware-based background into the revolution of computer-dependent production has given me a well-rounded perspective and respect for the creative process. The workflow of today is vastly different from the one when I first started out, but I feel that my years of experience have provided me with the solid background I need to produce compelling and creative content.
